Steering Committees where old-timers in the group who didnt have an on-the-surface commitment, such as coffee maker, chairman, literature, secretary, etc. They were the voice that carried the message via experience, strength, and hope, to help the group stay focused on the principles and traditions in various areas. They would share their knowledge at a meeting, business meeting or sometimes one-on-one to let a person know why the traditions were so important, and if not followed, could harm or relapse a newcomers sobriety. The years of experience in AA of those who keep coming back is where the value is of what works in AA and what does not â€" all those years of seeing things proven over and over again. If all the old-timers have left and a group is in trouble, GSO would send a GSR to help restructure the group. Today there are many, many groups in my area where the old-timers have left. There are no steering committees. New members are taking commitments too soon, such as a person with under a year being a Group Representative and going out and drinking before they have two years sober because they got right into the politics of AA rather than personal recovery and had no foundation. Most people in this area do not know that a GSR would come out and help restructure a group. There arent many who are willing to lead a tradition meeting and not many who want to attend one. The membership of old-timers has declined more and more with the new thinking: I have my sobriety, I did all the work already, I did all my steps, I only need 1 or 2 meetings a week (sometimes you hear a month), I am fine, I dont need to go, I. After reading this article I can relate to some of what Paramour is saying , with the whole going to college and realizing what you had plan would change I new for me it would be a little harder with going to school working full time and having two small children and everything that they are involved in. I would of never in a million years think I would change what I was studying until I started to work in the medical field and realized that’s it not what I wanted to do the rest of my life so I switched to something I knew I enjoyed doing when I worked for a big retail company and that was getting to know the business and human resource of the company. I also like how the culture was built with the company do think it’s a little crazy to have dogs in an office let alone nine of them I could see where this could go wrong and could cause a bad work environment. I also had to do interviews when worked for target UT there was a guild line that we had to go by and I don’t think it allowed us to get clear picture of the employee seeking work and I think being direct and straight forward would give you and the employee to have a chance to be honesty with one another and me personal I would rather have an honesty employee over someone that is Just going to tell me what I want to hear. I like the fact that Bryant asked if you only have five minutes what question would you ask in an interview and that Paramour said she would ask how hold the person was when the got there first Job, cause to me it shows a level of determination and responsibility and a lot about a person and that they have goals set for their self and everything wasn’t handed to them. I do agree with the advice Paramour gives at the end of the article and that was to get a Job and get started, because I can say when I was 18-19 1 thought I know what I wanted to do in life but have problem changes my mind about 100 times before I really knew what it was that I wanted to do and what goals to have set for myself. Experience Ive been attending church for as long as I can remember. The earliest time I remember going to church was when I was in pre-school, and I attended the same church until high school. Sundays were routine, we attended church, went out to eat after with other members of the church, and then went home to watch either football or baseball (sports being my second religion). Skipping church was never an option, nor did I really want to miss it. I had good friends at church, and was genuinely interested in the bible and the stories we read. My parents have been avid Christians since a few years before I was born. Both had been Catholic as children, and both stopped going for different reasons. After my grandma died when my dad was 17, he started questioning how that could happen if there was a God. My mom always believed there was a God, but she didnt agree with how the Catholic church was run and was looking for a change. When my dad returned, he went to a Christian church with my mom; they met with a pastor, and became Christians. When I was growing up, my parents decided to not get cable, which meant I spent a lot of time reading. Id often read bible-themed stories, or sometimes read a kids version of the bible. I found the stories to actually be entertaining, and I enjoyed reading them. My parents also enrolled me in a before school day care at a nearby church, where I read more bible stories, memorized scriptures, and met other Christian kids. My church life was at its peak, since I was enjoying church, my Sunday routine, and had friends at my church. We moved from Maine to New Hampshire, and still attended the same church. Then, my parents decided it was too far to drive to every weekend, and we found a new church that was closer. This church was smaller, less people, and not as much of a family as the old one was. There were only two kids my age, and I didnt really have a best friend like I did at my previous church. I began to dislike Sundays, asking to skip it more and more, and even the bible stories lost their magic. The few years I spent at that church seemed empty, almost like I was just going through the motions and not gaining any spiritual knowledge. This led to one of the biggest changes in my life so far. I moved to Florida before my junior year in high school. We tried a few churches out, and settled on one right down the road from our house. They had great music, a passionate youth pastor, and I made a few good friends immediately. It wasnt as great of a church as my first one had been, but it still re-ignited the passion I had for church before. I began attending youth group more frequently, went out with my friends from church, and began reading the bible with more regularity. Although I was finally happy with my church again, my lifestyle had changed. I went to parties during the weekends, had more homework during the week, and had soccer almost every day. This made it harder to find time for church related activities, and most of my best friends didnt attend my church or any church at all. I was closer to God then I had been, but still not at the religious point I had been at when I was younger. Even now, at college, I dont attend church on Sundays, and dont often read the bible. I believe in God, and try to live in a way which glorifies God, but I still dont totally devote myself fully to my faith. When I’m at home for vacations or breaks, it’s hard to find time to visit my church. I’m always out late, and with church being so early in the morning, its hard to motivate myself to attend church. During the school year, I don’t have any friends who go to church, and I don’t know where the nearest church is. I often spend the weekends relaxing from a tough week of schoolwork, so I’m out until four in the morning, and often in no condition to wake up early on a Sunday morning. I prefer to sleep in, watch football, and do homework. I believe Im entering the hardest years to be devoted to your religion, with so many distractions. If I can follow my religion and God through the rest of my college years, I think Ill be living for God for the rest of my life. I’m not sure if I’ll attend church weekly, or make my kids go to church, but I’ll always believe in God and try to live a good life.
